I completely agree that the large estates here are a menace to the raptor population and have commented on this to Findlay on previous occasions. Please do not think that I am complacent about this at all. I should also be honest and declare that I am a simple bird watcher and in no way an activist, but love what Findlay is doing and his strength to speak on behalf of birds! I know we have them here because we have large areas of forest preserve and prairie area as well and I have visited them and watched them switch of with the short eared Owl that shares the territory with them. I wish you well with your efforts. I agree that much of what is said about nature and wildlife falls on deaf ears, so perhaps it needs to be said loud enough or in different ways (as you are doing with your portrait) to get people's attention. However, all ground-nesting birds on Orkney now have to contend with the stoat, allegedly accidentally-introduced around 2010 and now prolific across virtually all of the Orkney Mainland island. For raptors like the Hen Harrier, their main prey item, the Orkney Vole, is also taken by the stoat creating a double impact. Scottish Natural Heritage has taken 7 years to reach the point of commencing trapping trials in which time the population has gone from one litter to thousands. It is not a rosy picture for the Hen Harrier even here.Nigelhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11298853117363888684noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1087997614866569468.post-48690086980517454052017-10-28T17:44:37.716+01:002017-10-28T17:44:37.716+01:00Scotland is certainly not a safe haven.

Well done you continuing to raise awareness of the plight of these species. It's true what they say about the hen harrier being emblematic of all that is wrong in our uplands. I think only land reform will change this - if the estates no longer have control over our land we can make sure it benefits all species - not a greedy minority of 'human)?)' beings.Lokihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07256216244965801022noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1087997614866569468.post-91931180209739051362017-10-28T14:17:18.658+01:002017-10-28T14:17:18.658+01:00Well said, Richard. Once or twice each year I visit an area of Scotland which has major areas of moorland owned by several large estates, most of which have an appalling record as far as raptor persecution is concerned. Whilst I do occasionally see Hen Harriers, these habitats should support large numbers of this species, and other raptors too. I think, therefore, that referring to Scotland as a 'safe haven' is a bit of a red herring. I get the impression that things are just as bad, if not worse, north of the border.

Please don't think I'm having a dig at you - I'm certainly not, and I know your heart is in the right place (thank you!), but I'm just concerned that 'safe haven' might lead to complacency. However, I decided that, given their record (basically, they don't give a toss), any such message would fall on deaf ears. I shall, therefore, send them to people who I believe can make a difference, and who have to consider what the public think of their 'organisations'. I'll give it some thought, but my local MP and Helen Ghosh (although I suspect that she too has deaf ears)immediately come to mind. I'll be in touch later.

Best wishes to you and the family - - - RichardRichard Peglerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05115206853645323899noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1087997614866569468.post-61888444172221721472017-10-27T22:48:39.972+01:002017-10-27T22:48:39.972+01:00Hari OM
