Blue Tits

I wanted to share with you the family of Blue Tits that have been feeding and nesting in the garden for about 3 years now.

I also wanted to write about these birds again is because I have got some great pictures tonight.

Tonight we also had a female Sparrowhawk was sitting on a fence about 50 yards from the kitchen window, however I didn't manage to get a picture because somebody walked past and scared it off and I couldn't get the camera working quick enough grrrrrr.

I know my head is like a encyclopedia of birds but I just wanted a few more tips on how to make my garden get more species and decent amounts of tits.

My mum and dad have just seen a Barn Owl, so I am going to look for it. Scary sky tonight. Going to try it on Sky Watch Friday.

  2. Keep putting a variety of food out Findlay, and the birds will keep coming. Some birds prefer to feed on the ground, and some will visit tables and feeders. So have a good mixture.
Peanuts, mixed seed, nyger seed, sunflower hearts; they will all attract their own specialist birds.
It looks like you have the suet blocks, fat balls and some seed.
I buy the cheap packs of mixed fruit in the winter, (the cooking aisle. in the supermarket). Soaked in water overnight to soften it up, Blackbirds and other thrushes love it.
A few weeds in the garden is good too. I call them wild flowers. The birds love the seed heads, but your mum and dad might not. :-)

  3. Hi Findlay, you're getting to grips with that camera I see!

The only thing I would add to Keith's comments (he knows his stuff, you know...lol) is the addition (if you haven't already) of a decent sized bird bath or even a small pond. Birds need to bathe to keep their feathers in tip top condition, it's also fun watching them splash about in the water...great photo opportunities as well...[;o)

    1. We have got a pond but birds can only get to the waterfall bit because we have a safety cage over the top. I am going to sort out another water supply thing.

  4. Well done Trevor, how could I have forgotten water.
    As important as the food.

  6. Some good tips already Findlay, and its great you want to attract more birds. A variety of seed types will help, try some Nyger and hopefully you will get some goldfinches. Also lots of cover and trees help as birds need the protection, and are more cautious of open spaces. Good luck!

  7. I love the pictures of the Blue Tits, they seem to feel right at home in your garden!

The threatening sky is truly impressive, beautifully captured! I hope the thunderstorm did not damage the crops.

    Happy Skywatch,
